Paul Olsen

Guest Artist on 2026 Arts Trail

Paul Olson’s sculpture practice is shaped by a deep sensitivity to the complexity of life, the rawness of nature, and the atmosphere of the environments he inhabits. His forms often carry a quiet gravitas—emerging through disciplined craftsmanship, intuitive decision-making, and his use of powerful materials such as ancient swamp kauri. Olson’s work may occasionally echo familiar sculptural languages, yet it exists firmly as its own contemporary voice. Each piece responds to the forces, patterns, and emotional currents found in the landscapes and experiences that surround him.

Working from a remote studio built for absolute focus, Olson often spends long stretches creating in isolation. This solitude sharpens his storytelling instincts and allows ideas to evolve with clarity and depth. At the same time, he recognises the importance of community within the arts. Over the years, he has intentionally surrounded himself with some of New Zealand’s finest artists, engaging in collaborations and shared conversations that challenge, refine, and expand the scope of his practice.

Alongside him, Ljubica Grubic —trained in the Eastern European art world and holding a Bachelor of Applied Arts—brings a bold, cross-material approach that pushes their combined creative output forward. Together, they shape an evolving sculptural practice defined by innovation, emotional resonance, and a commitment to the future of Aotearoa arts
