Grahame Roberts
Guest Artist on 2026 Arts Trail
As an artist who works with wood, usually Ancient Swamp Kauri, Grahame likes to use simple design to highlight the natural beauty within the timber. Grahame is self-taught and has been working with timber more than 40 years.
“I made my first wooden jewellery box around 1985 and haven’t stopped making them since. The first examples were made from recycled Rimu, then in 1996 we moved to Northland for work and I discovered Swamp Kauri”. Grahame found the story behind this timber fascinating, “it’s beauty simply stunning, so much so that I rarely work with any other timber”.
“While specialising in boxes, in more recent years Grahame has developed an interest in sculpture and Jewellery making with the occasional bit of wood turning thrown in. “I also make many other small items to avoid wastage of this magnificent material”.
