Sarah Gomes

Displaying precision and incredible attention to detail, Sarah’s bold and lineal work largely showcases the beautiful textures, colours and finishes found in created nature. Her pieces involve and include the warm hues of various timbers, the iconic coastal-colours shine of paua shell, the jewel tones and delicacy of feathers to the lux of gold leaf. Sarah’s skillful craftsmanship tames these natural materials into unique and contemporary framed pieces that are striking in their geometry and inspiring in their intentionality. In most of her work you will also find “the common stitch”, often in metallic thread - a signature detail in Sarah’s work.
Sarah is also a sewer, and moves her precision and love of detail to creating high quality leather goods and conversation-piece soft furnishings in luxurious fabrics. She is inspired by retro/vintage New Zealand pattern and design and also by the flora and fauna that is native to our special land.
She has been humbled over the years by the amount of media interest her various creative journeys have attracted - from local papers and publication write ups, two month-long stints on a children's after school TV show and winning a New Zealand-wide design competition run by a popular TV breakfast show.
Sarah was born and raised in Whangarei. After high school she studied design at Otago University, and over the years has sung and played the piano with many bands in many places too. In 2000 she returned to Whangarei with her husband to raise their three beautiful daughters. They are now first-time grandparents to Ollie - the joy of their hearts.
