Arts Trail Holidays and Learning Experiences
Whilst the Artists of W.H.A.T. make a very special effort to open wide the doors of their homes and their studio and to exhibit together for only two days of the year ‘The Arts Trail’ does not end when those two hectic days are over. The Artists and studios that make up ‘The Trail’ remain because all have their permanent homes on Whangarei Heads. It’s hard to say if the area is so rich in Artists because the natural beauty of the region draws them to live here or if those who come to live here can’t help but be inspired to ‘create’ by their surroundings. Whichever it is the Artists community of The Heads is a genuine year round working community which makes it a truly great place to stay for anyone interested in seeing Artists as they work, meeting Artists, working alongside Artists or learning skills and sharing facilities with Artists.
Many of our Artists are enthusiastic about sharing their homes, studios, work and skills with those who are interested. Some are prepared to open their homes and provide home stay experiences with or without shared workshops. Others offer self-contained accommodation at reasonable prices to those wanting to explore the Artists of W.H.A.T at a more leisurely pace than our two day event allows. All Artists offering accommodation would be delighted to help you arrange studio visits/viewings of work with other artists. All of our Artists live on The Heads which is, in total, about 35k long so all are within easy reach .
Almost all of our Artists will be happy to show you their work or arrange a studio visit by appointment but for visitors wishing to gain a greater, in depth, knowledge or take part in active learning experiences a number of Artists offer workshops. Some of them have formal teaching qualifications. All are listed under our WORKSHOPS & COURSES tab with an explanation of what they can offer and costs.
For those who would love a leisurely chance to see more Arts Trail Art and possibly fit in a work shop or two but also want the option of other activities to keep the family occupied Whangarei Heads has a whole range of other possibilities on offer. These include golf, fishing, surfing, diving, tramping as well as fabulous beaches to relax on and great café’s restaurants and taverns for eating and drinking.
