After graduating from Auckland Technical Institute with a Diploma in Graphic Design in 1988 I went on to work as a Graphic Designer. In 1996 I went back to ATI to study art, transferred to Otago Polytechnic and graduated in 1999 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
Then I travelled to Korea and Japan where I studied pottery part-time and was greatly influenced by a Japanese potter named Makio Hirakata. He taught me many new and useful throwing, slab-building and decorating techniques, which I still use to this day. |
The work I am exhibiting at the Arts Trail is a combination of some of my older pots and hanging wall-pieces created since returning from Japan, plus some of my latest ones which were created in the last year or so.
My latest pots (sculptures) are all coil-built and I have used coloured slips and clear glazes on them. I have been using paper clay for the last year or so as it’s more forgivable and easier for building big pieces with. I also enjoy how bright the coloured slips end up after firing on the paper clay body.
As well as doing pottery, I have also been painting on canvas, board, wooden plates and rocks in both abstract and figurative styles. N.Z's native birds continue to inspire me and feature in many of my paintings.
I live in Waipu and my home and studio are open to visitors. If you would like to make an appointment to visit me, please contact me via email or you are welcome to visit my website or see my work on Instagram: jbagleyart.
