I trained as a cabinet maker- joiner in Edinburgh, back in the day. Whilst doing my 2 year stint of National Service in the RAF in Wales, I made and donated wooden toys to a local orphanage.
After driving to NZ ( UK 1967....NZ 1968 ) I trained as a woodwork teacher and soon found that youngsters were not only interested in a face and edge mark and how to dovetail a joint, but also how to carve, say a fish....first they had to catch a real one!
When I work with wood I like the natural wood colours and grains and am ever amazed when turned and/or laminated wood throws up an unexpected variety. I was forever "rescuing" pieces of firewood for later close inspection!
